Residents within the Makerfield constituency, located in Greater Manchester, are preparing to vote in a by-election to select their new Member of Parliament. This electoral event follows the resignation of the previous Labour MP, Josh Simons, prompting the need for the constituency to elect a replacement representative.
Polling stations spread across the area—more than 30 in total—will be open from 07:00 to 22:00 BST on voting day. Once the polls close, the counting of votes will begin immediately, with the results anticipated to be announced early the following day, Friday. Voters have been advised to bring an approved form of identification to the polling stations, such as a passport, driving licence, bus pass, blue badge, or a voter authority certificate. Even expired photo IDs are acceptable provided the photo remains a good likeness, but photocopies will not be accepted.
This by-election is one of three currently occurring across the UK. Alongside Makerfield, the Scottish constituencies of Arbroath and Broughty Ferry and Aberdeen South are also holding by-elections after their MPs resigned to assume roles as Members of the Scottish Parliament following the recent Holyrood elections in May.
A total of fourteen candidates are contesting the Makerfield seat. The list includes representatives from a range of political parties as well as independent contenders. Among them are Labour and Co-operative Party’s Andy Burnham, Conservative Party’s Michael Winstanley, and candidates from smaller parties such as the Climate Party, Restore Britain, and the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. The full roster of candidates comprises: Jake Austin (Liberal Democrats), Count Binface (Count Binface Party), Andy Burnham (Labour and Co-operative Party), Dan Clarke (Libertarian Party), John Dyer (Independent), Ed Gemmell (Climate Party), Paul Gould (Independent), Alan ‘Howlin’ Laud Hope (The Official Monster Raving Loony Party), Robert Kenyon (Reform UK), Robert Pownall (Independent), Rebecca Shepherd (Restore Britain), Sarah Wakefield (Green Party), Peter Ward (Rejoin EU), and Michael Winstanley (Conservative Party)
