The timing of these Scottish by-elections coincides with another significant vote in Greater Manchester’s Makerfield constituency. This contest is being closely watched due to its potential impact on the leadership of the UK Labour Party, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s position possibly at stake. Andy Burnham, Labour’s Mayor of Greater Manchester, is expected to launch a leadership challenge if he wins the Makerfield seat.
Polling stations will open at 07:00 and close at 22:00 on Thursday. Election officials plan to count votes overnight, with the results anticipated during the early hours of Friday. This differs from the recent Scottish Parliament election process, where counting occurred at a different pace.
Both Flynn and Gethins secured their Westminster seats for the SNP at the 2024 general election but resigned to serve in Holyrood. For this reason, the Aberdeen South and Arbroath and Broughty Ferry parliamentary seats became vacant, triggering the current by-elections.
