A tragic discovery was made at Gatwick Airport when the body of a man was found inside the landing gear compartment of an Air Arabia aircraft that had just arrived from Morocco. The flight touched down from Tangier at approximately 11:45 BST on Tuesday, prompting the involvement of emergency services following the grim finding.
Officials from West Sussex Airport confirmed the incident and stated that their teams have been working closely with Sussex Police and HM Coroner as investigations proceed. Sussex Police have initiated a formal inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, while Air Arabia has been approached for a statement.
A representative for the airport expressed sympathy, saying, “A body was found and our teams subsequently supported Sussex Police and the coroner. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.” The deceased was described by a Gambia government spokesperson as an unidentified black male. The flight route in question, traveling roughly 2,760 miles (4,444 kilometers) from The Gambia to the UK, typically takes around six and a half hours for direct journeys.
This incident sadly echoes previous occurrences involving stowaways found dead in the UK. In 2001, the body of 21-year-old Mohammed Ayaz from Pakistan was discovered in the car park of a DIY store near Heathrow Airport.
