David Hunter, aged 78, who was found guilty of manslaughter after the death of his terminally ill wife Janice in Cyprus, has died. The incident occurred in December 2021, when Hunter suffocated his wife, who was battling blood cancer. Though initially charged with murder, he was ultimately convicted of manslaughter and served 19 months in prison before his release in 2023.
Originally from Ashington, Northumberland, Hunter had a background as a miner. He stated that Janice had pleaded with him to end her suffering as her condition worsened in their home in Paphos. After his release, Hunter was transferred to a care home on the island and was set to face an appeal hearing instigated by the Cypriot Attorney General, who deemed the original sentence too lenient.
Hunter’s daughter, Lesley Cawthorne, described her father as “a good, kind man and the best dad, who is very much missed by his family and friends.” Reports indicate that Hunter died in a hospital in Cyprus, where he had been receiving treatment for an infection.
During his trial, Hunter maintained that he would “never in a million years” have suffocated his wife without her express request.
