Rangers have officially named Derek McInnes as their new manager, agreeing on a three-year deal after settling compensation terms with their Scottish Premiership competitors, Hearts. McInnes steps in as the third Ibrox boss within a single year, taking over from Danny Rohl, who recently confirmed his move to Austrian club RB Salzburg. At 54 years old, McInnes arrives at Rangers following a strong season with Hearts, where he narrowly missed securing the Premiership title, finishing second behind Celtic. Under his guidance, Hearts also edged Rangers out in the race for Champions League qualification.
Before accepting the role at Rangers, McInnes had previously declined an offer from the club in 2017 to remain with Aberdeen. Now, he has followed Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland in transferring from Hearts to Ibrox. Upon his appointment, McInnes expressed his appreciation for the opportunity, stating: “It is a real honour. The demands here are clear and our supporters rightfully have high expectations. It is up to me, my staff and my players to meet those expectations, and have this club performing as it should.” He also highlighted the hard work ahead and his eagerness to engage with the squad and new signings in the weeks to come. Assisting him will be Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin, and Craig Clark.
While Danny Rohl held the title of head coach, McInnes will take on the role of manager, having been favored for the position once Rohl’s move to Salzburg was confirmed. Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh praised McInnes’ appointment, noting his long-standing admiration for the Scot. “He is exactly what this club needs at this moment in time,” Cavenagh stated, emphasizing McInnes’ solid track record in Scottish football and his familiarity with the demands of winning in the league. Rohl, who is 37, had taken over from Russell Martin in October and helped Rangers compete strongly before a disappointing finish saw the club end the season in third place without any trophies. Cavenagh publicly acknowledged Rohl’s contributions and commitment, thanking him for his efforts throughout his tenure.
Derek McInnes brings extensive managerial experience to Rangers, having managed over 800 games during his career. He began coaching with St Johnstone in 2007 and subsequently worked with Bristol City before a notable eight-year period at Aberdeen. His time at Pittodrie was marked by consistent success, including lifting the League Cup and securing multiple second-place Premiership finishes behind Celtic. After a short break, he resumed management with Kilmarnock in 2022, guiding the team back to the Scottish top flight and achieving respectable league finishes. At Hearts, McInnes maintained an unbeaten home league record last season and produced strong results, including multiple wins against Rangers and Celtic. His new role at Rangers reunites him with striker Lawrence Shankland, who recently moved from Hearts after a successful season
