Couple on board yacht describe encounter with Russian warship

Jane and Alan Kelvey, a retired couple from Britain, shared their experience with BBC’s Newsnight after an encounter with the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich on Tuesday morning. The couple came into close proximity with the warship during their time at sea.

Jane explained that the Russian vessel sounded its horn five times, which she interpreted as a signal asking, “Have you seen us?” In response, they adjusted their course by turning two degrees to port, deliberately indicating that they had noticed the warship’s presence.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the yacht approached the Admiral Grigorovich in what was considered a “dangerous approach.” After several unsuccessful attempts to communicate via radio and the deployment of warning flares, the warship’s crew fired rifle shots into the yacht’s path as a further warning.

The UK Ministry of Defence characterized the event as an “isolated incident,” emphasizing it was unrelated to the recent detention of a Russian shadow fleet tanker in the English Channel over the weekend
