On Tuesday morning, a confrontation occurred in the English Channel involving a Russian warship and a UK-registered yacht. The vessel in question was identified as the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich. The smaller yacht, which lacked its own means of propulsion, had drifted towards the warship amid foggy weather conditions after departing from the UK.
As the yacht approached, the Russian frigate first issued an audible warning, followed by firing warning shots aimed at encouraging the yacht to alter its course and move away. Despite the alarming nature of the encounter, no injuries or damage to the yacht were reported. Occupants of the yacht informed British authorities that the warning shots were fired from approximately 500 yards (457 meters) away, a close range for maritime standards.
The event took place roughly 20 nautical miles, or about 23 miles, south of the Isle of Wight, placing it outside UK territorial waters. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence confirmed that investigations into the incident are underway. Officials have made it clear that this episode is not believed to be connected to a recent operation occurring on the preceding Sunday, and it is being treated as an isolated event.
Russian naval vessels, including the Admiral Grigorovich, frequently navigate the English Channel and are typically monitored by the Royal Navy. During this particular incident, the frigate was reportedly shadowed by HMS Mersey. Over the previous weekend, the same frigate had been tracked by both HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey in what the Navy characterized as a “routine operation” after being spotted near the French port city of Brest. NATO sources have revealed that Moscow had tasked Admiral Grigorovich with escorting so-called shadow fleet vessels through the Channel. The warship has been operating in the region for an extended duration and has been periodically resupplied by the repair ship PM-82, which has been seen moving between the Channel and the North Sea according to satellite imagery. NATO officials believe this vessel supplied food, water, and other essentials, enabling Admiral Grigorovich to maintain prolonged deployments while leading Russian convoys. Earlier in April, the frigate was noted to have accompanied six shadow fleet ships through the waterway under observation by the Royal Navy.
Although the Ministry of Defence views this incident as isolated, it takes place amid heightened tensions between Russia and the UK, largely driven by Britain’s continued support for Ukraine
