Authorities have arrested three individuals from south Wales following the confiscation of a record-breaking shipment of cannabis valued at £139 million. The police operation uncovered 12 tonnes of cannabis hidden within shipping containers that were en route to a port on England’s southern coast.
This shipment had been brought into the UK from Canada, with an estimated street value reaching £139 million. Those apprehended include two men and one woman, ranging in age from their 30s to 40s, residing in Merthyr Tydfil, Ebbw Vale, and Abertillery in Blaenau Gwent. The arrests took place on a Tuesday morning.
The investigation originated after the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) intercepted a cannabis shipment destined for the UK. Following this lead, authorities identified two containers holding 12 tonnes of cannabis packed into 1,200 boxes, which were on their way to Southampton Port.
Subsequently, the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) executed warrants at the homes of the three suspects in south Wales on 16 June. They were all detained on suspicion of facilitating the importation of cannabis and are currently in police custody. Mike Tapp MP, the UK government minister for migration and citizenship, described the seizure as “record-breaking,” calling the importation of drugs into the UK a “vile trade.
