Children attending schools in Preston and Manchester expressed varied reactions to the recent proposal to prohibit social media use for those under 16 years old. This plan was announced by the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, earlier this week.
The proposed ban targets popular platforms including Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X, with the restriction expected to be implemented by spring 2027. The aim is to regulate access to these sites among younger users.
When interviewed by the BBC, some students questioned the necessity of the ban, suggesting that increased parental responsibility might be a better approach to managing social media use. They implied that involvement from parents could play a more significant role than outright restrictions.
However, not all opinions were skeptical. One pupil expressed optimism, stating a hope that the ban “will have a positive impact on young people’s lives and their mental health,” highlighting a belief in potential benefits from limiting early exposure to social media
