Train services to Gatwick Airport and Brighton were halted on Sunday after engineers found sinkholes near a railway bridge in south London. The issue was uncovered during scheduled maintenance work on the railway lines just outside Purley station, prompting urgent repairs to address the problem.
To ensure passenger safety, Network Rail temporarily closed all tracks between Purley and East Croydon while awaiting a full structural assessment from an engineer. As a result, the Gatwick Express trains departing from Victoria station have been suspended, and the closure is anticipated to last until at least Monday morning.
With trains out of service, heavy traffic congestion is building around Gatwick Airport. Passengers have been advised by Network Rail to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. For those who must continue their journeys, tickets are being accepted on several alternative routes, although these options are limited and expected to be overcrowded.
Southern Railway confirmed that no services are running between Purley and East Croydon and also urged customers to refrain from traveling if possible. The train operator warned that alternative journeys might take significantly longer—up to 90 minutes more in some cases—and some trips may not be feasible during this disruption.
