Rathcoole: Man who suffered 'racially-motivated' attack says he regrets moving to NI

A man living in the Rathcoole estate of County Antrim has been left fearing for his life after a series of racially motivated attacks culminating in his car being set ablaze. Originally from Nigeria, the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed deep regret about moving to Northern Ireland to pursue his studies, citing years of encountering both direct and indirect racism.

Over the past five months, the man’s home on Mournebeg Drive has been targeted on three separate occasions. These incidents have included racist graffiti sprayed on his walls, a brick hurled through a window, and most recently, an arson attack on his vehicle. The cumulative effect of these attacks has left him terrified, not only for his property but for his personal safety.

Speaking to BBC News NI, the man revealed his growing fear: “My biggest fear is burning the house… I don’t know whether it will be my life next. Maybe they would want to come to kill me. Or stab me.” He conveyed the overwhelming sense of insecurity he feels, saying, “I’m scared of the house, I’m scared of the street, I’m scared of the community. I’m scared of my neighbours. I don’t know who is who.” Despite his fears, he admitted that changing people’s mindsets seems beyond his control.

In light of these attacks, the man is considering leaving Northern Ireland altogether. He told reporters he might relocate to another part of the UK or possibly return to Nigeria, stating, “Seeing as that’s what they want, I don’t mind.” Throughout the past year, the victim has endured verbal abuse, including being insulted with racial slurs in public. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has been contacted for comment regarding the situation
