Eileen Fox, a 56-year-old employee at a convenience store in Bootle, Merseyside, has spoken out after being dismissed for intervening in a suspected shoplifting incident. Fox described the decision to terminate her employment as “very harsh.” She explained that she had confronted a regular shoplifter by grabbing the woman’s coat sleeve when she saw her taking items from the shelf.
The incident occurred on 27 April at the One Stop Shop on Randall Drive. According to Fox, the suspected shoplifter collided with a metal stand and fled the store carrying packets of bacon. Fox emphasized that the woman likely was not hurt during the event. The store’s management later informed her that her actions had “put the business at risk,” leading to her dismissal in writing on 12 May following an internal investigation.
Fox, who had worked at the store since September 2022, expressed her distress over the decision and noted her ongoing struggle to find another job. “It’s very harsh what they’ve done – it’s very upsetting,” she told the BBC. She added that the union representative had recommended a final written warning instead of dismissal, but the company believed she might repeat her actions: “They said they’ve sacked me because they think I would do it again, which I wouldn’t.” Fox described the incident as happening “so quickly” and said she “acted on instinct,” insisting this had never happened before in her professional or personal life.
The dismissal letter from One Stop stated that Fox had “followed” the shoplifter and “grabbed her and slammed her into a metal stand.” Fox disputed this version, clarifying she did not follow the woman but instead grabbed her sleeve as she was attempting to leave. The woman then lost her balance and bumped into the stand. After police were informed by the store’s duty manager, Fox was suspended following an investigative meeting with senior managers. Although Fox acknowledged that she breached company policy by confronting the shoplifter, she highlighted the tense atmosphere at the store following a recent robbery involving a problematic individual who had caused disruptions multiple times in one day. One Stop has emphasized that it instructs employees never to put themselves at risk and provides training on how to handle such incidents safely, alongside ongoing security improvements and police collaboration
