Derbyshire Police officer accused of using AI to 'create evidence'

Derbyshire Police have initiated a criminal investigation concerning an officer who is suspected of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to fabricate evidential material in multiple cases. Following these allegations, the officer has been suspended from frontline duties while the inquiry is ongoing.

The force indicated that the officer is suspected of perverting the course of justice, although no arrests have been made at this point. Collaborative efforts between Derbyshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) are underway to address any cases that might be affected. A CPS spokesperson confirmed their engagement with police forces, defense teams, and the courts, emphasizing that, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, further comments would be inappropriate at this time.

Derbyshire Police provided a statement reaffirming that this investigation is at an early stage and highlighted their close cooperation with the CPS. They emphasized that no additional information could be released currently, and reiterated that the officer implicated has been temporarily removed from frontline responsibilities pending the outcome of the investigation.

This development coincides with the recent establishment of PoliceAI, a new national centre dedicated to AI in policing. At the centre’s launch, interim director Alex Murray commented on the importance of responsibly integrating AI within law enforcement: “Crime and technology are evolving rapidly. Policing must keep pace by adopting AI responsibly to catch criminals and keep people safe.”
