A 21-year-old British man from Morley, Dylan Phelan, has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison after admitting to encouraging a vulnerable American citizen to take his own life during a video call. The victim, Travis Dyer, also aged 21 and residing in Louisiana, had been grappling with mental health difficulties and had been in communication with Phelan for several months through the Discord platform.
At Leeds Crown Court, details emerged that Phelan, along with two other American men known only as Mads and Rob, were part of a private Discord server called ‘Recovery4all’. Despite its name, prosecuting lawyer Andrew Petterson described the group’s dynamic as ironic, emphasizing that its members did not provide support but rather encouraged Dyer’s suicidal intentions. During a brief call on 30 October 2024, the trio pressured Dyer to end his life, with Phelan’s conduct described by Judge Barry Cotter KC as fueled by “morbid curiosity.” The judge emphasized that while Dyer was in desperate need of help, he instead received harmful encouragement.
Further evidence presented in court revealed a chilling pattern of exploitation and manipulation. The group urged Dyer to deplete his finances on drugs and alcohol and even coerced him into carving their initials into his skin, including Phelan’s name. This sustained cruelty was part of a systematic attempt to groom Dyer into suicide. The court heard about the tragic background of the young man, who had lost close family members in childhood, including his mother and sister to drowning. Dyer’s great-grandmother described him as a resilient individual whose promising future was cruelly taken.
The distressing call ended with Dyer’s death by gunshot, and Phelan was heard laughing afterwards. The following day, another Discord user, Zachary Law, who was not part of the ‘Recovery4all’ group, was informed of the suicide by Phelan and subsequently alerted authorities via a contact in the U.S. Phelan’s involvement only came fully to light five months later after his parents brought him to the police, following a confession fueled by boasting about the incident to a woman. During sentencing, Judge Cotter condemned the actions as a cooperative effort that exacerbated Dyer’s suffering and observed that although Dyer had doubts about his decision, it was the encouragement from Phelan and his associates that led to the tragic outcome. Ongoing investigations are targeting the other men in the U.S., with authorities warned about the dangers posed by at least one individual, described as having boasted of his involvement in multiple suicides. Additionally, Phelan admitted to offenses involving indecent images of a child and possession of extreme pornography. His legal counsel acknowledged his remorse and ongoing struggles with suicidal thoughts
