Kayley Stead, who was left standing at the altar when her fiancé failed to show up on their wedding day, chose an unconventional path by continuing with the ceremony. Despite the disappointment, Kayley went ahead with the celebration, turning what could have been a heartbreaking moment into a memorable event. Her determination to carry on made her an unexpected social media sensation back in 2022, with many of her guests embracing the unusual circumstances and deciding to “just go with this madness.”
The footage from that day captures Kayley dressed in her wedding gown, confidently making speeches and dancing, all in the absence of a groom. Four years later, Kayley has moved on and found happiness once more. She is now engaged to Richard Perrott, who resides with her in Swansea. Reflecting on their relationship, she joked about needing to keep track of him, saying, “I’m going to invest in AirTags because he needs them all over him, obviously, so I need to know where he is at all times.”
Revisiting the experience, Kayley shared with BBC Radio Wales Breakfast how the timing and effort behind the wedding influenced her decision to proceed. Emerging from the social isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, with friends and family arriving from distant places including Ireland and Scotland, she had already invested nearly £12,000 of her own money. One particular motivator she mentioned was the wedding’s food arrangement, which featured a nacho bar complete with a cheese fountain, salsa, guacamole, and jalapeños. “I had the whole works. I love it,” she said with fondness.
Kayley ultimately made the most of her day, and the video of her non-traditional wedding has been viewed online by more than 800,000 people. Afterward, rather than following through with the planned honeymoon in Turkey, she chose to travel to New York accompanied by a friend. Describing this solo honeymoon, she said, “I did things by myself, like have breakfast in a window eating a croissant. It was such a poignant moment. It was like a movie.” Meanwhile, her connection with Richard, a university acquaintance who had initially asked her out when they were first years but was turned down before roles reversed, blossomed into a romantic relationship two years ago. Richard recently proposed during a return trip to their old university, catching Kayley by surprise. Discussing the engagement, she said, “It was just a complete shock,” noting that he had been playful about his intentions for some time.
Kayley has found strength from her past experiences and is looking ahead with optimism. She speaks openly about how reclaiming her confidence after the first wedding shaped her into a more assertive person, saying it has “made me stand up for myself.” She and Richard are planning a new wedding for April 2028, one she describes as “a big party” that will undoubtedly feature an even grander nacho bar at its center
