This weekend marks the return of Generation Circus’ Over 50s Circus Showcase, an event that defies the common notion that play, performance, and daring acts are exclusively for the young. Taking place on Sunday, 14 June in Hertfordshire, UK, the show titled ‘A Rebellion Against Ageism’ will feature a vibrant lineup of circus artists aged between 50 and 96. Audiences can expect a variety of acts including trapeze, hula hoop, juggling, clowning, and dance, all performed by participants from Generation Circus’ weekly workshops.
The performers involved in this showcase have been honing their circus skills through free workshops funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, held at Ware Drill Hall. These sessions cover a wide range of disciplines, from juggling to trapeze, allowing participants to learn and practice new talents in a supportive environment. Many of the performers are returning from last year’s successful production, ‘Will You Still Love Me?’, which attracted sell-out audiences of 500 people.
One of the featured performers, Carol, known for her pink hair and trapeze, dance, and hoop acts, shared how the circus became a vital outlet after a personal tragedy. “Circus gave me a way to reconnect with the world, it’s given me a purpose and brought a little bit of sparkle back into my life. Performing is my escape from the reality of life’s hard knocks, my happy place,” she said. Carol also performs burlesque under the alter ego Talula Demure and encourages others to “be a kid at heart because the older you get the more you can get away with.”
Generation Circus was founded by Emma Taylor along with her daughter Maisy, both of whom have deep roots in contemporary and social circus. Emma recalled her family’s history with circus performance, mentioning that her husband Dave and she had a doubles trapeze act in the 1990s and that Maisy began participating in shows as early as age four. Reflecting on their journey, Emma said, “Maisy, Dave and I have been a circus family for three decades — and building Generation Circus together has been the most rewarding adventure of all.” Dave now supports the group by handling various behind-the-scenes tasks essential to their productions.
Participants like Alison from last year’s show praise the inclusive atmosphere created by Emma and the team. Alison stated, “Emma has created a wonderfully nurturing, safe space where we can come as we are and feel accepted. There’s
