Further man charged after violence at Southampton Nowak protest

A man has been formally charged following violent incidents during protests in Southampton linked to the murder of student Henry Nowak. The demonstrations erupted after police bodycam footage was made public, showing the 18-year-old Nowak being handcuffed after sustaining stab wounds inflicted by Vickrum Digwa. Digwa, aged 23, has since been sentenced for the murder.

Ryan Atkinson, a 36-year-old resident of Southampton, faces a charge of violent disorder. He is scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court in the near future. The unrest began when a crowd gathered outside the city centre police station on June 2, before moving closer to Digwa’s family home. During the disturbance, 12 police officers and a police dog sustained injuries amid objects such as wheelie bins and chairs being thrown.

Authorities from Hampshire police have reported that with this charge, the number of protesters formally accused has now reached 22. The protests followed intense public reaction to the tragic incident, which has deeply affected the local community.

Henry Nowak, originally from Chafford Hundred in Essex, was fatally stabbed in Southampton last December by Vickrum Digwa. Digwa falsely alleged that he had been the victim of racial abuse. At the time of his death, Nowak was a first-year student pursuing accountancy and finance studies at the University of Southampton. Nowak’s family has strongly denounced the violent behavior that occurred during the protests
