A man convicted of a violent sexual assault has fled the United Kingdom after mistakenly being released from prison. Bernadin Dedic, aged 48, was found guilty in absentia of multiple charges related to the attack, which involved holding a woman at knifepoint, threatening her life, and committing numerous rapes and sexual assaults over several hours.
The incident took place in Dedic’s west London residence shortly after he had separated from his partner. According to prosecutor Simon Sanford, Dedic, having consumed significant amounts of red wine and cocaine, lured the victim into his basement. There, he threatened her with a red-handled kitchen knife, warning that her screams “wouldn’t be heard.” The ordeal was prolonged and terrifying for the victim.

This rare mistake is currently under investigation by the authorities, with judicial officials emphasizing the seriousness of the error and their commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Dedic did not appear in court, offering various reasons such as suffering a heart attack or a skiing injury to avoid returning to the UK. When he failed to attend the trial in June, despite multiple efforts by judges, police, and Border Force agents to secure his presence, the case proceeded in his absence. If he continues to evade sentencing, UK authorities are expected to seek his extradition. Eurostar has stated that it does not conduct border checks or have access to passengers’ criminal records, highlighting that such responsibilities lie with government border agencies
