Norwegian teenager Johannes Natland, aged 19, was apprehended last March at the Briar Court Hotel in Huddersfield, UK, following accusations that he traveled to the country to execute a targeted killing. During his arrest, body-worn camera footage revealed Natland mimicking the action of firing a gun upon noticing a green laser dot aimed at his chest by firearms officers. Police found two firearms and twelve rounds of live ammunition in his possession. While he has admitted to possessing these weapons and ammunition, Natland denies involvement in a conspiracy to commit murder.
Prosecutors allege that Natland flew from Stavanger, Norway, under orders from the Foxtrot Network, a Swedish criminal organization with connections to Iran. Evidence presented in court showed that Natland was added to a Signal group chat shortly after his eighteenth birthday and inquired immediately about the identity of a target. Only days later, armed with an emergency passport, he took a flight to Manchester. However, border officials stopped him due to limited funds, absence of accommodation, and lack of a return ticket. Though initially denied entry, he was temporarily allowed to stay until a scheduled return flight four days afterward.
Once in Huddersfield, Natland received directions via Signal on where to retrieve cash hidden by the group. He then checked into the hotel using cash payments. Further messages instructed him to travel to woodland outside town, where he found two handguns and a stolen car with a hidden key. The evening before his arrest, Natland sent videos of the firearms and a photo of himself posing with money spread out on the hotel bed to a friend. A Signal contact known as “Agent 47,” believed to have arranged his travel, messaged him saying, “We have much to do tomorrow.” He was detained in his hotel room the next morning.
Additional developments include the recent conviction in Norway of another teenager responsible for recruiting Natland to carry out the assassination in England on the Foxtrot Network’s behalf. Psychiatric reports admitted by the court explained that Natland has a history of psychotic disorder induced by psychoactive substances, and he had been discharged from psychiatric care six weeks before traveling to the UK. Despite this background, two psychiatrists testified that his mental health condition does not qualify as a legal defense in this case
