Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a private meeting with King Charles III at Windsor Castle on Monday, following discussions with European allies of Ukraine. The encounter allowed Zelensky to express his gratitude toward the UK for its steadfast support amidst ongoing conflicts.
During their meeting, Zelensky described the UK’s backing as “ironclad” and shared his intention to invite King Charles for an official state visit to Ukraine later this year. This diplomatic interaction comes shortly after Ukraine, the UK, France, and Germany jointly urged for a “just and lasting” resolution to the war with Russia in a published statement.
Earlier discussions in London brought together Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where they pledged unwavering support for Ukraine. The three European leaders, often collectively referred to as the E3 group, called on Russia for an immediate ceasefire, condemning its recent extensive missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities.
Following his meeting with King Charles, Zelensky also addressed controversies arising from certain councils affiliated with Reform UK removing Ukrainian flags from town halls. He expressed hope that the flags would be reinstated, emphasizing the delicate nature of global relations and cautioning against small actions that might damage important international friendships. A spokesperson for Reform UK responded by stating that supporting Ukraine’s cause does not conflict with their position that only domestic flags should be displayed on public buildings within the UK
