Boy, 16, who died in Rother Valley lake 'could not swim' – inquest

A tragic incident occurred during the recent heatwave when 16-year-old Muhammed Secka lost his life after encountering difficulties in a lake. An inquest revealed that Muhammed did not know how to swim. His body was discovered the day following an emergency call to Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire on Bank Holiday Monday.

At the Doncaster Coroner’s Court, it was disclosed that a post-mortem examination indicated signs consistent with drowning. However, the coroner emphasized that this finding is preliminary and further inquiries are underway. Muhammed is among at least 17 individuals who have died in open water incidents amid the recent spell of hot weather. The inquest into his death was opened and then adjourned to a later date set by senior coroner Nicola Mundy.

Coroner’s officer Siobhan Golightly provided details of the events, explaining that Muhammed had been at the country park with several friends on the evening of 25 May. Around 7 pm BST, while swimming with his friends, he disappeared from view. An alert was raised immediately, leading to emergency services being notified. Muhammed’s body was recovered from the water in the early hours the following day, and paramedics confirmed his death at the scene. Golightly also noted, “It’s reported that Muhammed was not able to swim.” No relatives were present at the hearing.

In the aftermath, friends and family of Muhammed have established online fundraising initiatives, including a Gofundme campaign. One organizer spoke warmly of him, saying, “Muhammed was a much-loved son, friend, student and member of the community who brought light, laughter and kindness to those around him. His loss has deeply affected everyone who knew him, and the pain felt by his family and loved ones is unimaginable.” This heartbreaking event, along with several others over recent weeks, has led emergency services, families, and campaigners to strongly urge young people to avoid open water areas during such heatwaves
