There is a straightforward way to check if you are benefiting from workplace pension contributions, which could improve your financial situation in the future. Many employees aged 22 or older, earning more than £10,000 a year, are automatically enrolled in pension schemes where part of their salary goes into retirement savings. If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, the best course of action is to review your payslip for pension deductions or speak to your employer’s HR or payroll department.
Typically, about 5% of your earnings are contributed to a pension fund, which is separate from the state pension. If you do not direct this money into a pension, it will be subject to tax, reducing your take-home pay without any retirement benefits. What makes these pensions particularly valuable is that employers must add at least an additional 3% of your salary to your pension pot, essentially providing ‘free money’ you cannot access until retirement. While it is possible to opt out if you need the cash now, saving more early on usually results in greater growth over time.
There are some important points to keep in mind: workers earning below £10,000 a year but above £6,240 can ask to join the pension scheme, and the employer is required to contribute too. Women often benefit from early savings given the likelihood of career breaks for caregiving responsibilities. If you hold multiple jobs with earnings under £10,000 individually, you might not be automatically enrolled, so planning for retirement savings is crucial in those circumstances.
