Robert Smethurst, co-owner of Macclesfield FC, has been suspended from his responsibilities at the club following his arrest on suspicion of coercive control. The 48-year-old was taken into custody in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on 19 May in connection with allegations of controlling and coercive behaviour. The club has announced that Smethurst is currently “temporarily relieved of all duties” as they seek legal advice regarding the matter.
In response to the allegations, Smethurst confirmed his arrest but strongly denied the accusations, describing them as “an absolute load of rubbish.” Expressing deep regret over the situation, he said, “I’m absolutely gutted, devastated. I want my club back.” He also appealed to supporters for their continued backing during this difficult period. “I love the people that have supported me. All I can ask is that they support me through this time,” he added, hoping for the local community to unite behind him.
Cheshire Constabulary provided further details, stating that the suspect has been released on bail while investigations are ongoing. The force confirmed: “On Tuesday 19 May a 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour in Wilmslow,” and that he remains on bail pending further inquiries.
Macclesfield FC, which was rescued from insolvency by Smethurst in 2020, issued a statement on behalf of its board of directors addressing the situation. The club acknowledged awareness of the reports but emphasized that, given the circumstances, it was appropriate to temporarily relieve Smethurst of his duties pending legal review. They urged the public to refrain from speculation, assuring that all actions are aimed at protecting the club’s future. The statement concluded by saying more information will be shared as soon as possible
