An arson attack at a bus depot near Grays has resulted in the destruction of approximately 36 double-decker buses. The incident occurred shortly after 18:00 BST on Friday at the Chadwell St Mary site, according to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the location, creating a significant visual impact.
Fire crews from Grays, Basildon, and Orsett responded to the blaze and managed to bring it under control by around 21:00. Station manager Lee Hurst described the fire as a “significant and challenging incident involving a large number of vehicles.” He also confirmed that an investigation had determined the fire had been deliberately started. Hurst expressed gratitude toward both the firefighters and local farmers who assisted in controlling the fire.
Essex Police are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and have stated that it is being treated as a suspected arson. Officers are collaborating closely with the fire service to determine the full circumstances behind the incident. So far, no arrests have been made, and police noted they are pursuing several lines of inquiry.
Meanwhile, road closures in the vicinity of the depot were lifted by about 21:00 on the same evening, allowing traffic to resume. The police continue to work on gathering more information as the investigation proceeds
