Betty Brown, recognized as the eldest surviving victim of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, is set to be honored with an OBE at Windsor Castle today. Brown was among hundreds of sub-postmasters who were mistakenly accused of theft due to faults in the Horizon computer system. In 2003, she was compelled to leave her branch in County Durham despite her and her late husband having spent over £50,000 of their own savings to cover supposed losses that were never genuine.

Reflecting on the honor, Brown emphasized that the award is not just a personal accolade, stating it “won’t be a Betty Brown medal,” but rather a tribute “for all the sub postmasters that we have lost.” This highlights the collective struggle and injustice faced by many others affected by the scandal.

The heart of the issue lies with the Horizon IT system, which caused erroneous data that led to more than 900 wrongful prosecutions of sub-postmasters. Across the UK, thousands were unjustly held responsible for financial shortfalls at their branches, resulting in considerable personal and financial hardship.

In response to this widespread miscarriage of justice, the government has disbursed compensation totaling over a billion pounds to the victims. This payout reflects the scale and severity of the impact caused by the flaws in the Horizon system
