Port Talbot Tata Steel fire and residents told to stay indoors

A significant fire has erupted at the Tata Steel facility in Port Talbot, south Wales, prompting authorities to urge nearby residents to remain indoors. The blaze began around 8:00 pm BST at one of the processing lines within the steelworks. Emergency response teams from Mid and West Wales Fire Service quickly attended the scene, and Tata Steel confirmed that all staff had been safely evacuated.

South Wales Police reported that emergency personnel are still managing the situation on-site, working to control the incident. Thick smoke plumes have been seen rising from the plant, visibly spreading over the surrounding area. Kellie Evans, who witnessed the scene while driving nearby, described it as “very apocalyptic.” She noted that the smoke was so dense the flames were obscured, with many motorists stopping to observe the dramatic sight.

In response to the fire, residents have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed to reduce exposure to smoke. Drivers are also encouraged to avoid the area and find alternate routes if possible. Tata Steel emphasized that the fire is unrelated to the controlled demolition of an old gas holder that occurred on Wednesday evening. The company also expressed gratitude toward both the site personnel and emergency responders for their swift and professional handling of the incident.

Although traffic cameras showed that the M4 motorway near Port Talbot remained open, congestion has been reported in the area. Emergency crews continue their efforts to bring the fire under control as investigations into its cause are expected to follow once the situation stabilizes
