Changes made to Childwall active travel scheme following public feedback

Liverpool City Council has revisited its active travel plans for Childwall following extensive input from local residents, businesses, and community groups. Earlier this year, the Council put forward proposals for a new route dedicated to walking, cycling, and wheeling, connecting the city centre with Childwall. The public was invited to review the initial designs and provide their feedback.

The consultation process saw close to 500 responses, revealing strong public support for creating safer pathways for all types of road users. However, many participants also expressed concerns regarding the potential elimination of parking spaces, the impact on green areas, and worries about increased traffic congestion in parts of the route.

In light of this feedback, the Council has made several adjustments to the original scheme. Notably, it has committed to preserving trees around Childwall Triangle and adding more pedestrian crossings to improve safety and accessibility. Furthermore, the Council is considering the introduction of 20mph speed limits in certain stretches, following suggestions raised during the consultation.

These updated proposals will be integrated into the refined designs, which will continue to be developed in the upcoming months. Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, emphasized the importance of the consultation: “Making our streets safer for all road users, particularly those walking, wheeling and cycling, is a priority for the Council. We want to make sure that people have a choice in how they travel through the city and feel confident in doing so. Hearing from the people who live, work, and travel through the area before we start any work is vital and I’d like to thank everyone who got involved. We’ve received a lot of fantastic feedback, which has helped us to shape the plans further and deliver a scheme that works for everyone.”
