An 11-year-old boy named Mackenzie Swift has been reported missing after entering the River Don in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. The incident occurred around 20:00 BST on Saturday when Mackenzie was seen going into the water near Ferry Boat Lane. Since then, extensive search efforts have been ongoing to locate him.
South Yorkshire Police described the situation as every parent’s worst nightmare, highlighting that the search operation includes specialist underwater teams and Mountain Rescue volunteers. A spokesperson for the force conveyed the heartbreaking update to Mackenzie’s family, explaining that if Mackenzie had not exited the river shortly after going in, survival in the water for such a length of time would not have been possible. Unfortunately, no evidence has been found suggesting that he left the river.
Police officers have been providing support to Mackenzie’s family throughout this difficult time, while advising the public to keep away from the search area. Chief Superintendent Pete Thorp emphasized the importance of allowing professional teams to handle the operation, urging members of the community not to risk their safety by entering or searching near the water. He also asked for cooperation with officers when instructed to leave the site, to ensure that search efforts remain focused and effective.
This tragic incident is part of a wider pattern of water-related deaths that the UK has seen during the recent heatwave, with at least 15 fatalities reported. Among these, a teenager was found in the River Wharfe in the Yorkshire Dales and later died in hospital. Additionally, a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire died after getting into trouble in the sea near Merseyside, while a woman in her 60s tragically passed away after entering the water to rescue a dog in Thornton Cleveleys.
