Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon gave an exclusive interview to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg regarding the £400,000 embezzled by her estranged husband, Peter Murrell. Murrell, who served as the chief executive of the SNP for over two decades, reportedly spent party funds on a range of items over 12 years. These purchases included more than 1,000 items such as expensive coffee machines and a luxury campervan costing £124,550. The revelations have stirred significant public and political interest, prompting Sturgeon to address the situation in detail.
Sturgeon expressed her bewilderment at some of the expenditures, emphasizing that both she and Murrell were individuals with relatively high salaries but lived without children or an extensive social life due to her demanding political career. Murrell’s salary reportedly decreased from £104,492 in 2011 to £79,750 by 2021, while Sturgeon’s income around the same period was substantially higher, with her 2021-22 gross income recorded as £140,496. She has consistently been transparent about her financial situation, publishing her tax returns since 2016, partly in response to the Panama Papers scandal.
One of the most scrutinized purchases was the campervan, bought in late 2020. Murrell purchased a luxury Niesmann and Bischoff motorhome, and when questioned, explained it was intended for use in advance of the 2021 election campaign. The vehicle remained parked for two years outside the home of Murrell’s elderly mother in Dunfermline, some 40 miles from Sturgeon and Murrell’s Glasgow residence, before being impounded by the police. Sturgeon’s legal team stated she had not noticed the campervan during visits to her mother-in-law’s property, highlighting her limited awareness of many of these expenditures.
This controversy has raised broader questions about financial governance within the SNP and led to increased calls for transparency.
