Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur blocked from entering UK by Home Office

Two prominent American political commentators, Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur, have been denied entry into the United Kingdom following the revocation of their visas by the Home Office. Both figures, known for their left-wing perspectives, were slated to appear at the SXSW London festival as well as an event in Oxford but were unable to travel due to the cancellation of their Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETA).

Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and political commentator, alongside Cenk Uygur, co-founder and host of the YouTube show “The Young Turks,” have criticized UK authorities, alleging that their visa cancellations were a direct response to their outspoken criticism of Israel. Piker has faced controversy over pro-Hamas remarks, while Uygur described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “barbaric.” Both deny antisemitism, with Piker stating he is “anti-Israel” but not antisemitic.

Uygur expressed his frustration via social media, stating: “I’ve been banned from the UK. I tried to get on a flight to London to attend SXSW London and give a speech at Oxford. I’ve been banned for criticising Israel. Are we free any more? This is oppression of western citizens by our own governments on behalf of a different country.” Piker responded similarly, accusing the UK of acting “at the behest of Israel” and warning that “the west is betraying ‘liberal values’ for a genocidal fascist foreign government.”

The decision to revoke their visas was supported by certain political figures such as Labour MP David Taylor, who applauded the Home Office for barring individuals he claims promote hate and division. Meanwhile, groups like the Community Security Trust welcomed the move, emphasizing that public figures crossing the line into hate speech must face consequences. However, other voices, including Green Party leader Zack Polanski and the human rights organization Liberty, criticized the government’s approach, warning it risks suppressing legitimate political dissent and calling for transparency concerning such decisions.

SXSW London, a multi-day event held in Shoreditch, East London, featuring over 800 speakers, artists, and screenings across various subjects including culture, technology, and business, confirmed awareness of the visa cancellations but stated that entry decisions rest solely with the Home Office. The festival remains committed to fostering open dialogue and diverse perspectives even as some scheduled participants are unable to attend
