Girl, 15, dies after swimming at Formby beach

A 15-year-old girl from Cheshire tragically passed away after encountering swimming difficulties at Formby beach on Bank Holiday Monday. Chiedza Nyanjowa was rushed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in critical condition but died earlier on Saturday, according to Merseyside Police. Emergency responders had been alerted to concerns for her safety around 15:30 BST on Albert Road, near the beach.

Chiedza’s family shared heartfelt words about her, remembering her as a kind and bubbly individual who loved her faith and church. They expressed gratitude for the assistance she received from members of the public during the incident, emphasizing how the support she got reflected how much she was loved. The family also noted that Chiedza aspired to become a nurse someday, so she could give back to others.

This unfortunate event comes amid a series of at least twelve water-related fatalities during the recent period of hot weather across the UK. Among those who have died were young people in various locations such as Lancashire, Cheshire, Kent, Oxford, and Scotland. Other victims included older adults, with a man in his 60s losing his life in Cornwall and a woman in her 70s in Wales. In related incidents, a man was hospitalized after being rescued from a Nottinghamshire lake, and searches have recently been called off for another man who went missing in the Norfolk Broads.

Following these tragedies, the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) issued a caution regarding the rise in accidental drownings coinciding with warmer weather. They pointed out that despite higher air temperatures, water remains dangerously cold, increasing the risk of cold water shock, which impairs swimming ability. The RLSS advised anyone witnessing a water emergency to immediately call 999, avoid entering the water themselves, and instead throw a floating object to the person in distress to aid their safety
