Man jailed for murder of Martin Glynn in Desborough, Northants

A man has been sentenced to at least 22 years in prison for the murder of his 93-year-old friend, following a brutal and prolonged assault. Samuel Field, aged 40, subjected Martin Glynn to more than 24 hours of violent abuse at Field’s residence in Desborough, Northamptonshire, in September 2024. The elderly victim endured punches, kicks, stamping, and strangulation during the attack.

Samuel Field, who used to live on Gold Street, was found guilty of murder and handed a life sentence at Northampton Crown Court. Prosecutors characterized the assault as “senseless” and “entirely pointless.” The victim, Martin Glynn, suffered such severe injuries that he was left unable to walk and died three months after the incident, on 26 December 2024. During the attack, Field reportedly made voice recordings discussing a conspiracy.

At the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Adrian Langdale KC explained that the relationship between Glynn and Field was a “long-standing imbalanced relationship.” The court was informed that the two men had known each other for approximately 20 years, with Glynn regularly giving Field substantial sums of money, including £200 in cash during weekly visits. The prosecution also revealed that Field began using drugs heavily following a relationship breakdown, which contributed to his “aggressive paranoid state” towards people around him.

Langdale further stated that in the months before the attack, Field’s behavior became increasingly threatening toward his own family, neighbors, and landlord. Video footage from a security camera inside Field’s property showed the violence began almost immediately after Glynn entered on 19 September, with a “powerful punch” followed by numerous kicks and stamping on Glynn’s head while he was prone. Judge Stephen Eyre described the incident as a “sustained attack” marked by “prolonged and repeated beatings.
