In September 2022, a man named Desmond Bernard entered Croydon police station to reveal a harrowing secret he had kept for nearly 50 years. Bernard recounted how, in 1978, his stepmother Janice Nix caused the death of his five-year-old sister Andrea by scalding her in a hot bath at their home in Thornton Heath, south London. Although Andrea’s death had originally been ruled an accident, Bernard, who was eight years old at the time, disclosed that Nix had forced him to lie about the circumstances surrounding her death. He described a household ruled by fear, with punishments including physical beatings and being made to eat cat food.
Janice Nix, aged 67, was found guilty of Andrea’s manslaughter and of cruelty to Bernard following a jury trial at Isleworth Crown Court. Police investigators highlighted that it was only because of Bernard’s bravery in coming forward decades later that Nix was ever held accountable. Detective Constable Fran Homer, a member of the Metropolitan Police’s cold case team, spoke about how Bernard had struggled with guilt over the situation despite having no responsibility for what occurred. Homer suggested that Bernard’s decision to speak out was motivated by a desire to be “the voice of Andrea she didn’t have,” feeling burdened by carrying the secret for so many years.
Building a case against Nix proved difficult due to the scarcity of surviving records. Detective Homer described Nix’s calm demeanor during her initial police interview in November 2022, noting that she repeatedly responded with “no comment,” seemingly confident that proclaiming her version of events would suffice over a child’s testimony. Nix was no stranger to the criminal justice system; she had previously published a memoir detailing her past as a well-known London drug dealer nicknamed Mama J. After her release from prison around 20 years ago, she spoke openly about the challenges she faced reintegrating into society, including depression caused by difficulties finding work due to her criminal record.
