The UK government has announced plans to upgrade WiFi services on more than 1,400 main line trains across the country. This upgrade will introduce new technology enabling trains to connect to low-earth orbit satellites, offering a faster and more dependable connection than the mobile networks currently used for onboard internet access. The initiative aims to significantly improve connectivity for passengers on major routes throughout Britain.
A government insider described the project as a major boost for train connectivity, promising to address both slow internet speeds and frequent coverage gaps, commonly known as “not-spots.” This move follows successful trials of satellite-based internet on several rail operators, including LNER, South Western Railway, and Great Western Railway. With £57 million in funding allocated, the technology is expected to be rolled out across nationalized main line services in the coming years.
The government hopes to raise WiFi availability during train journeys from the current 50-60% to at least 90%, providing a more reliable alternative to the existing system which depends on local 4G and 5G mobile network masts. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to formally present these plans during the summer. Although campaign groups have welcomed the improvements, passenger concerns continue to focus primarily on issues like travel costs, overcrowding, and service reliability.
Representatives from rail advocacy organizations recognize the importance of upgrading WiFi but emphasize that it should complement broader efforts to enhance the rail experience. Bruce Williamson from Rail Future described WiFi connectivity as essential but not the top priority for travelers, highlighting that affordability and punctuality remain the key challenges. Similarly, Michael Solomon Williams of the Campaign for Better Transport praised the step forward but noted that unreliable internet has not been the main deterrent for train travel. The independent watchdog Transport Focus also expressed support for the initiative, calling reliable onboard connectivity essential for modern passengers.
