Ruth Dodsworth, a well-known TV weather presenter for ITV Wales since 2000, has spoken openly about her experience of financial control and abuse at the hands of her ex-husband. She revealed that he completely restricted her access to her own money, forcing her to ask him for even small amounts just to cover basic daily expenses. Dodsworth later uncovered that she was left utterly penniless, saddled with debts she was unaware of, a situation that deepened her distress.
Describing her relationship with her ex, Dodsworth recalled meeting him in her early 20s when he appeared charismatic and successful. However, as his nightclub business began to falter, their dynamic shifted drastically. “He went from being effectively this larger than life successful business character to almost the other end of the scale,” she said. What had once been a comfortable financial situation turned into one where her modest earnings became the centerpiece of their strained relationship, coinciding with a significant change in his behavior towards her.
Money was a key tool of control in their marriage. Dodsworth explained how her salary would be deposited in her bank account but then withdrawn by her ex-husband, leaving her with no access to funds. “I had to ask him for money if I wanted to buy a sandwich at lunchtime,” she said, detailing how the exact change given to her prevented her from socializing freely, especially with colleagues. Her bank card even disappeared and was never replaced, reinforcing her isolation. Furthermore, her ex would monitor her movements closely, showing up at her workplace to verify her whereabouts and forcing her to prove who she was with when on assignment. Even her mobile phone became a point of control, with him attempting to unlock it using her thumbprint while she was asleep.
The emotional toll was severe, as Dodsworth described feeling terrified and overwhelmed in the later stages of their relationship. “My hair was coming out,” she recalled, along with the isolation and anxiety she endured while trying to maintain professionalism on the job. The situation reached a breaking point in October 2019 when her children warned her not to return home due to her ex’s escalating behavior. The following day, after his arrest, she spent ten hours at a police station recounting the intimate details of her experience, only then understanding the nature of coercive controlling behavior. Her ex-husband pleaded guilty to charges including coercive behavior and stalking, receiving a three-year prison sentence and a restraining order. Looking back, while the public exposure of her ordeal initially felt overwhelming, Dodsworth acknowledged it ultimately was beneficial.
Rebuilding her life post-separation has been difficult and humbling. Without a bank account or credit standing, she had to rely on her parents to help secure housing. Yet, a small victory came when she opened her own bank account and bought a coffee without needing to seek permission or justify the purchase. “That might sound like the simplest thing but it was one of the biggest achievements in my new life,” she said. Dodsworth hopes her story will inspire others, emphasizing that recovery is possible. “I am so lucky that I am here and I will, until the day I die, use my voice and my experience so that we can keep the conversation going and we keep it out there.”
