Liverpool City Council has gained national acclaim at the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) Annual General Meeting, where its groundbreaking and effective public health efforts were recognized among leaders from across the UK. The council’s Public Health Annual Report (PHAR) stood out during the AGM’s Annual Report session, earning praise for its use of clear infographics and visually engaging presentation that made complex public health information easier to understand for both residents and stakeholders.
This is the sixth occasion Liverpool has been acknowledged for its PHAR, highlighting the city’s consistent excellence in communicating public health priorities and achievements. Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, commented on the honor, saying, “To be recognised nationally again, both for our impact and how we communicate it, shows Liverpool is leading the way. This report demonstrates how long-term investment, prevention and community insight are reshaping services and improving lives.”
Liverpool’s achievement underscores its established reputation for prevention-driven, community-centered public health practice, along with its skill in effectively sharing this work. Professor Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, expressed pride in the recognition: “Liverpool is proud to be contributing to the national conversation on public health. Being recognised again for how we present and communicate our Annual Report is particularly important. It reflects our commitment to making public health meaningful, transparent and accessible to everyone.”
Nicola Close MBE, ADPH Chief Executive, also praised Liverpool’s report, noting the competitive field this year and the high quality of submissions. She stated, “This year, we received a record number of submissions for our Annual Report Celebration, showcasing excellence from across the system. The standard was exceptionally high, with every report demonstrating remarkable creativity and innovation. I am delighted to share that Liverpool City Council has received a special mention for notable use of infographics. My sincere congratulations to Matt and the team, this report clearly reflects the depth of expertise and commitment that underpins our work across public health, and powerfully demonstrates its role in improving the health and wellbeing of our communities.”
Liverpool City Council’s latest Public Health Annual Report also details a comprehensive programme aiming to transform services to enhance access, outcomes, and equity for residents. This ambitious overhaul covers significant redesigns in sexual health, drug and alcohol services, tobacco control, infection prevention, and support for children and families. Looking ahead to 2026, Public Health Liverpool plans to build on its progress by focusing on innovation, cost-effectiveness, and maintaining strong community involvement in public health delivery
