The Conservative Party has revealed its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Makerfield. This election is set to take place on Thursday, 18 June, in the Greater Manchester area.
Michael Winstanley, who previously served as the Mayor of Wigan, will be standing for the Tories in this contest. His selection comes after Labour MP Josh Simons resigned, creating the vacancy. Mr. Simons stepped down to provide Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham with the opportunity to run for the seat and attempt a return to Parliament.
Commenting on the choice, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch praised Winstanley, stating that he “would make an excellent champion of the area having lived in, worked in and represented the local community for years.” This endorsement highlights Winstanley’s strong ties to the local region.
