UK weather: Is a heatwave forecast for the Late May Bank Holiday weekend?

Certain regions of the United Kingdom are anticipating a potential late spring heatwave, with temperatures predicted to climb as high as 28 degrees Celsius just before the upcoming bank holiday weekend. This forecast follows an episode of unusually chilly weather experienced during the previous week. Over the next few days, temperatures are expected to rise back to more typical levels before increasing further, even though some rainfall is still anticipated despite a generally drier trend after midweek.

By midweek, temperatures could reach around 21 degrees Celsius (70°F). As the week progresses into Thursday and Friday, conditions are expected to dry up across most areas, with the southeastern parts of England potentially seeing temperatures soaring up to 28 degrees Celsius (82°F). Should these forecasts hold true, this would mark the warmest spell of weather so far this year, surpassing the earlier peak of 26.6 degrees Celsius (79.8°F) recorded at Kew Gardens during a relatively warm early April.

One of the key factors driving this warming pattern is a shift in wind direction. The cold snap experienced last week was mainly due to northerly winds. At the start of the current week, south-westerly winds from the Atlantic brought areas of low pressure and associated unsettled weather. However, later in the week, the wind is expected to change, blowing from the south, which will allow temperatures to rise significantly.

Regarding the possibility of an official heatwave, the Met Office defines this as a period of at least three consecutive days where daily maximum temperatures exceed county-specific thresholds, indicating unusually hot conditions for that region. For example, the threshold stands at 28 degrees Celsius in Greater London but is only 25 degrees Celsius in Northern Ireland. There is a chance that areas such as Herefordshire and Worcestershire might fulfill the criteria over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, although the development of showers during the bank holiday weekend could affect this outcome. Overall, many locations are still likely to enjoy warm days with temperatures ranging between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius, but some areas, particularly in Scotland, Wales, and western England, may experience scattered showers during the weekend. Monday looks to be generally dry with an easterly wind that will keep North Sea coastal regions cooler
