A bride recently experienced the unique joy of having two wedding celebrations just a day apart, allowing her grandfather, who suffers from dementia, to participate in the special occasion. Emma Noakes, 34, was married in April, but her grandfather, George Lacey, was unable to attend the ceremony due to the progression of his illness. To ensure he could still be involved, a second event was held at his care home, complete with a two-tiered wedding cake, champagne, and the opportunity for him to walk Emma down the aisle.
The second wedding took place at Glenburnie Lodge, located in Wenvoe, Vale of Glamorgan. Emma Watson, the director of the facility, expressed her happiness in creating a memorable event for both George and his family. The initial wedding was a small, intimate gathering of around 35 guests, reflecting the couple’s preference for a quiet celebration. When it became clear that George couldn’t join the main day, the family initially planned a modest gathering at the care home, thinking it would simply involve some photos and a light buffet with him.
However, the care home staff went above and beyond to transform the planned visit into a much grander celebration. According to Noakes, the team decorated the garden extensively, including constructing a balloon arch, while the chef prepared a special two-tier wedding cake. Most importantly, the care staff assisted George in walking Emma down the aisle, turning the day into a heartfelt and unforgettable experience. Invitations were extended to other residents and their families, all of whom attended dressed in wedding attire, creating a joyful atmosphere within the home.
This celebration offered much-needed happiness to a family coping with the challenges of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Since George’s admission to hospital in May 2024, his condition has rapidly worsened, leaving him unable to recognize his family although he still recalls names out of habit. For Noakes, the recreated wedding was especially meaningful because George was one of the home’s first residents when it opened, and she has always been very close to her grandparents, who she describes as “like secondary parents.” Emma Watson remarked, “George was one of the first residents to move in when the home opened in 2024 so needless to say, he is much-loved and very popular,” and she was pleased the occasion became “an occasion to remember.”
