Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, did not cast a vote in the recent local elections held in London, according to a party spokesperson. The explanation given was that Polanski was unable to update his electoral registration in time after relocating as a lodger in rented accommodation, following a change in his intended move.
Earlier, Polanski had publicly expressed his support for Hackney mayoral candidate Zoë Garbett in a video dated 3 May, stating, “you have my vote.” In addition, initial reports suggested that he might have used a postal vote in Hackney despite being seen campaigning in Wales on polling day. However, the Green Party later clarified this was a misunderstanding.
The spokesperson also revealed that since taking leadership of the party, Polanski has experienced increased personal risks, including targeted antisemitic and homophobic abuse. The situation has been severe enough to result in two arrests associated with threats or abuse against him. These security concerns, coupled with the additional steps necessary for anonymous voter registration, ultimately prevented Polanski from registering to vote.
Regarding his living arrangements, Polanski resided on a houseboat until recently, which presented certain practical challenges. The boat’s marina falls under Waltham Forest borough council, where Polanski was last registered to vote. While he paid council tax on a separate London address where he lived in a rented room, he stayed on the boat only intermittently. Polanski acknowledged confusion about council tax obligations related to the boat, saying, “I thought I had been paying monthly mooring fees and I presumed the council tax would be included in that.” His approach remains one of responsibility, as he stated he is seeking clarity from the council and is willing to pay any council tax owed.
