The deaths of three young women in the sea off Brighton have been described as “tragic and horrendous” by the city’s council leader. Bella Sankey, who leads Brighton & Hove City Council, called the news “the most devastating” the city had experienced in a long time. She highlighted the difficult situation, noting that the women had not yet been identified and their families were still awaiting notification.
Emergency services were alerted early on Wednesday morning after a report was made around 05:45 BST of a single person in the water near Black Rocks car park on Madeira Drive, a coastal road along Brighton’s beachfront. Upon arrival, crews discovered two additional bodies nearby in the sea. Reports suggest the women, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old, had been initially seen near Brighton Palace Pier before drifting toward the marina. Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing, with police considering the possibility that the women entered the sea from the nearby beach and subsequently encountered difficulties.
In response to the incident, a large cordon was set up around the Black Rock beach area, although the site has since reopened to the public. Council leader Sankey expressed her sorrow, emphasizing how unexpected and heartbreaking the event is for the community. She also mentioned that the council had recently conducted a seafront safety review and continued to strive for comprehensive lifeguard coverage, particularly during the busier summer months, despite the challenges involved.
Locals from Brighton Marina voiced their feelings about the tragedy. Ash Middleton described the event as very sad for the city, adding that the sea conditions in the area can be quite hazardous.
