Man shot dead by police in Bedford after overnight stand-off

In Bedford, a man was fatally shot by police following an extended overnight standoff. The incident began late on Monday evening when Bedfordshire Police responded to reports of damage to vehicles on Aylesbury Road at around 22:40 BST.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a man in his 40s barricaded inside a property, reportedly making threats. Specialist armed officers, assisted by police negotiators, engaged with the individual for several hours. However, the man eventually produced a weapon, prompting police to open fire at approximately 09:30 on Tuesday morning.

A police cordon remains in place while an investigation into the circumstances continues. The man was declared dead just before 10:30, and the police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The response involved not only armed officers but also negotiators, the East of England Ambulance Service, two critical care teams from Magpas Air Ambulance, and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated during the operation but have since been allowed to return as police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Specialist officers are currently providing support to the deceased man’s next of kin
