A serious incident occurred in the town centre of Arnold when a red Vauxhall Astra collided with five pedestrians, resulting in one person sustaining life-threatening injuries. The event took place around 01:10 BST on Saturday in Market Place. Nottinghamshire Police indicated that an argument likely preceded the crash. Following the collision, the driver—described as a white male—left the scene on foot and abandoned the vehicle.
Authorities have assured the public that counter-terrorism units are not involved, and there is currently no evidence suggesting any continuing danger to the broader community. To facilitate their inquiries, police have cordoned off Market Place along with the adjoining roads including Gedling Road through to Derby Street, Hallams Lane, and Central Avenue. These restrictions are expected to last for an extended period, with officials encouraging people to avoid the area while investigations proceed.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow emphasized that the incident has understandably caused concern locally but reassured that no further threat has been identified. She appealed to anyone who witnessed the event, or who was present in the town centre at the time, to come forward with information. She stated, “We believe an argument has taken place in Arnold town centre and this has resulted in a car being driven at a group of people.” She also mentioned that, although five individuals were injured, police are keen to hear from others who may have been involved or who have relevant details.
Local leaders responded promptly to the incident. Michael Payne, the MP for Gedling, reflected on the impact of the event and expressed his support for the victims and the community. He said, “This has been my home my entire life. I live in Arnold and we’ll respond in the usual way as a community and will support the police in the important work they’re doing.” Gedling Borough Council leader John Clarke called for safety measures to be implemented, highlighting the need for barriers along the roadway to protect residents and businesses. Clarke remarked, “There need to be barriers, there needs to be prevention, and we need to look at it seriously to make people feel safe, to make the businesses stay here so they’ll prosper.
