John Rytting, who was convicted in 2017 for child cruelty and supplying drugs to his former partner’s young daughter, has passed away in prison, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) has confirmed. The four-year-old girl, Poppy Widdison, tragically died in June 2013 after experiencing prolonged neglect and mistreatment. At the time of her death, Poppy had collapsed at her home in Grimsby and later died in hospital due to a cardiac arrest.
Rytting, 49, was sentenced after it was revealed that he had given Poppy various drugs, including heroin, methadone, diazepam, and ketamine over several months leading up to her death. Poppy’s mother, Michala Pyke, was also imprisoned for the same offense. Both denied administering drugs to the child despite evidence to the contrary. The counseling and social services involved failed to fully recognize the dangers Poppy was facing every day, as highlighted by a serious case review.
The PPO reported that John Rytting died on 22 April while held at HMP Hull. The circumstances of his death are now under investigation, which is routine for all deaths occurring in custody. A spokesperson for the PPO stated that the findings from this investigation will be released after the inquest into Rytting’s death, which is scheduled to open soon.
During the original trial at Hull Crown Court, it was revealed that Rytting and Pyke encouraged Poppy to consume sedatives because they considered her a burden on their lives. Although the drugs themselves were not the direct cause of Poppy’s death, experts described the situation as “a long period of ill-treatment and neglect by the grossly inappropriate administration of various drugs to the child.” The case review further criticized local agencies for missing multiple opportunities to intervene and protect Poppy from harm
