A man involved in drug trafficking has been sentenced to over 16 years in prison following the discovery of more than £1.6 million in cash, much of which was concealed within hidden compartments at a residence in Bradford. Zulfiqar Shah, aged 58 and currently without a fixed address, previously admitted guilt to charges including conspiracy to supply heroin, ketamine, and possession of criminal property.
During a police operation on August 7, West Yorkshire Police officers seized 2.2 pounds (approximately 2.5 kilograms) of heroin, 41.4 pounds (18.8 kilograms) of a substance commonly used to dilute drugs, and ketamine from a property on Rhylstone Mount. Alongside the drugs, £230,000 in cash was initially recovered, prompting Shah’s arrest and remand.
Following additional intelligence, officers returned to the property on October 14 and uncovered secret compartments within two bedroom wardrobes, where they found around £1.4 million in cash. The total amount recovered during the investigation reached £1,625,693.82. This sum is now set to be addressed in a confiscation hearing under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
The recovered funds are planned to support various agencies, including West Yorkshire Police and neighbourhood initiatives under the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund. Detective Inspector Chris Rukin, who led the case, described Shah as a key figure in the distribution of Class A drugs. He emphasized that the large amount of money seized reflects the extent of Shah’s criminal activity, noting the broader harm caused by illegal drug trade, which contributes to crime and serious violence in local communities
