During Monday night in west Belfast, police officers came under attack amid episodes of disorder. The unrest took place following reports of large groups of people and numerous vehicles congregating and engaging in dangerous driving behavior along Blacks Road, Bell Steele Road, and Dairy Farm areas.
The responding officers were subjected to assaults, with young individuals hurling bottles and pieces of masonry at them. The disturbances resulted in two officers being hit, and several police vehicles sustained damage. Authorities have condemned these actions, describing them as reckless and harmful to the wider community.
Chief Inspector George addressed those involved, urging them to reconsider their actions due to the potential serious consequences. He emphasized the dangers such behavior poses not only to local residents but also to other road users. An evidence-gathering operation is underway, with investigations ongoing to identify those responsible for the disorder.
Local politicians have spoken out about the events. Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker commented that dozens of cars and hundreds of young people had assembled on Stewartstown Road for what was termed a “so-called meet-up.” He described the situation in the Colin area as “absolutely chaotic” and “nothing short of a disgrace,” highlighting the risks to life as vehicles spun on the road and motorbikes sped up and down. Independent Belfast city councillor Paul Doherty echoed these sentiments, calling the scenes “disgraceful, dangerous and totally unacceptable,” and condemning the threat to the safety and peace of the local community
