A high school teacher, Jamie Varley, aged 37, stands accused of abusing and murdering Preston Davey, the 13-month-old baby he and his partner had adopted. At Preston Crown Court, evidence was presented describing how Varley brought the unconscious infant to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, pleading with medical staff, “Don’t let him die,” and confessing, “I effing killed him.” Despite the emergency team’s efforts to revive Preston, he was pronounced dead on 27 July 2023 after nearly an hour of resuscitation attempts.
The prosecution alleges that during the four months Preston lived with Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, aged 32, the baby suffered routine mistreatment, including sexual abuse and physical assault. Post-mortem examination revealed approximately 40 injuries on Preston’s body. Both Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley deny the charges, including murder, sexual abuse, and cruelty. McGowan-Fazakerley faces accusations of allowing the child’s death, along with charges related to child cruelty and sexual assault.
On the day of Preston’s death, paramedic Simon Crabb witnessed Varley running toward the ambulance bay carrying the limp baby. Crabb described how Varley appeared “hysterical,” recounting that the baby had been left in the bath while Varley took a shower for three to four minutes. Despite immediate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions by medical staff, no water was found in Preston’s lungs, challenging the assumption of drowning made by the accused. During the resuscitation, Varley was extremely distressed and at one point said, “I effing killed him.” Dr Wendy Aubrey, a senior anaesthetist, recounted how Varley attempted to perform chest compressions and rescue breaths on Preston even after a breathing tube had been inserted, forcing staff to intervene.
Additional details revealed that four hours before the fatal hospital visit, Varley had visited his mother’s house, where a video was recorded and sent to McGowan-Fazakerley showing Preston happily playing and clapping along to a song. Prosecutors claim that after leaving his mother’s home, Varley inflicted a final sexual assault on the child. Varley denies all the charges against him, including murder, manslaughter, multiple counts of assault by penetration, cruelty, grievous bodily harm, and offences related to indecent images. McGowan-Fazakerley also denies all charges, including allowing Preston’s death and sexual assault allegations
