Bristol explosion: Jo Shaw died after ex Ryan Kelly 'forced way into house'

A tragic explosion in Bristol resulted in the deaths of a woman and her ex-partner after he forced entry into her home while in possession of an explosive device. Jo Shaw, aged 35, and Ryan Kelly, 41, were both killed in the incident that took place on Sunday. Police have classified Shaw’s death as a homicide and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blast.

The police report indicates that three other individuals, including a child, sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment but did not require hospitalization. Avon and Somerset Police stated that they first received an emergency call at 06:17 BST from someone inside the property on Sterncourt Road in Frenchay, reporting that a man known to them had forced his way into the house. Shortly after, the caller informed the authorities that the intruder was believed to have an explosive device, and the explosion occurred at approximately 06:32.

Superintendent Matt Ebbs from Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the force had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to previous encounters with the victim linked to other domestic-related incidents. Officers trained specifically for such events have been assigned to support Shaw’s family during this difficult time. Supt Ebbs expressed sympathy for the grieving family, asking the public to respect their privacy amid widespread interest in the case.

Following the explosion, first responders arrived swiftly, including police, fire, and ambulance services. A bomb disposal team was dispatched to conduct thorough searches of the surrounding area to ensure public safety. Although a police cordon was initially in place, it was partially lifted by Sunday evening, allowing most residents to return to their homes. Additionally, a search at another property in Speedwell, associated with Kelly, did not lead to any evacuations. Authorities continue to treat the explosion as deliberate but have ruled out any terrorism connection. The coroner will ultimately determine the official cause of death as investigations proceed
