King Charles concluded his royal visit to Bermuda by inaugurating a new observatory operated by the UK Space Agency (UKSA) and introducing a project aimed at monitoring space debris. This event took place on Cooper’s Island, where the King unveiled a plaque to officially mark the launch of the facility. The observatory is central to Project Nova, which involves establishing a network of telescopes across five locations to track objects orbiting Earth, including defunct satellites and spent rocket parts.
Later the same day, the King opened the Great Bay Coast Guard Station in St David’s, where he presented operational medals to members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment. He also had the opportunity to observe cutting-edge technologies deployed to safeguard the island’s marine environment and surrounding waters. After these engagements, the visit came to a close at LF Wade International Airport in St George’s. There, Premier David Burt, along with other dignitaries, gathered to bid farewell as the King prepared to depart.
King Charles received a warm ceremonial welcome earlier in his visit, including a 21-gun salute and military procession in the former capital, St George. A marching band even played Bob Marley and the Wailers’ “Jamming” in his honor. Addressing guests at a garden party held at Government House, the King acknowledged the historical significance of his visit, noting, “I am told to my amazement it is also the first time in Bermuda’s 400-year history that the islands have received a reigning King. I am terribly sorry it has taken so long.” He emphasized Bermuda’s importance, saying, “I need hardly say that Bermuda, like all the overseas territories, is a most cherished and important member of the British family.”
The four-day trip followed an intense state visit to the United States. During the US leg, King Charles and Queen Camilla engaged in numerous formal and public activities, including a community parade in Virginia and high-profile meetings in Washington, DC. The King addressed both houses of the US Congress, marking a historic moment in his reign. Additionally, the royal couple visited New York City, paying respects at the September 11 Memorial and connecting with families affected by the 2001 attacks, further underlining the diplomacy and outreach central to this significant period of King Charles’s reign
