A recent stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, left two men hospitalized but stable. The victims, Shloime Rand, aged 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, were attacked in the neighborhood. Authorities apprehended a 45-year-old man named Essa Suleiman, who is currently in custody facing suspicion of attempted murder.
Isaac, a volunteer with the community safety group Shomrim, recounted his experience during the event. He was driving away from his workplace when he became aware of a disturbance and promptly exited his vehicle. Upon looking around, he spotted a man with visible head wounds and soon after noticed the suspect, observing, “if eyes could kill, I’d be dead.” Despite being informed that the suspect was armed with a knife, Isaac followed him along Golders Green Road for approximately 100 yards, maintaining a cautious distance.
Isaac described the suspect’s demeanor as “walking slowly, casually,” but he clearly saw the knife in the man’s hand. To protect others, Isaac shouted warnings to the bystanders to stay clear. The police arrived near the North Circular, and as sirens sounded, the suspect’s behavior escalated, going “a bit berserk.” Officers deployed a Taser to subdue him, but he clung to the knife, prompting Isaac and another volunteer to intervene physically.
Isaac took hold of the suspect’s left ankle to prevent him from moving freely, explaining, “I was holding onto his ankle, making sure that he couldn’t move his leg, his left leg,” to stop the man from wriggling away. This effort, combined with help from both a passerby and the police, eventually enabled the knife to be removed. Reflecting on his actions, Isaac expressed that his volunteer role compels him to confront danger rather than avoid it, stating, “if we find danger, we run toward it, we don’t run away, we never run away.” He also shared a sense of pride, feeling “amazing for saving the community and saving lives.”
According to a statement by the Metropolitan Police, the suspect has a background involving serious violence and mental health challenges. He was previously referred to the government’s Prevent counter-terrorism programme in 2020. However, a spokesperson confirmed that this referral was closed within the same year
